Every summer, from around June to the beginning of October, Malu Grapes Theme Park (马陆葡萄主题公园) in Jiading District of Shanghai is open to the public. Entrance fee is 30RMB, and with that ticket you can purchase the park’s organic grapes at 25RMB/jin. There are different grapes you can pick on different days, and you can taste the different types of grapes they harvest right at the Visitor’s Centre.
It’s interesting to check out the different grapes the farmers harvest in the park, and see other fruit and vegetable plants lining the walkway. However, being the price sensitive halfpat that I am, I opted out from buying or picking any grapes from the park. Instead, I drove to another farmer’s grape farm to pick and buy from them instead (10RMB/jin). Along the way to the park, there are many touts holding signboards encouraging you to follow them to their own farms. Follow at your own risk! Now that you know the prices I paid, you’ll know if they’re giving you a good price or not. Before picking the bunch of grapes, do pluck one or two grapes to try first.
Getting there:
Since I converted my driving license, I started renting a car in Shanghai to get around and explore in and beyond the city.
But according to SmartShanghai, this is how you can get to the Malu Theme Park:
Take Metro line 11 to Malu Station, then either hop on Malu Line 1 Bus马陆一号线 which will deposit you outside the ‘Park’ or treat yourself to an orange taxi, starting at only 12rmb. The journey should cost you no more than 20元, 马陆葡萄主题公园, (Mǎlù pútáo zhǔtí gōngyuán), will get you there.
